Needs improvement

Wonk that I am, I can't resist a good state-rankings list. The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) put out one last week that I missed because I was fretting about the storm. It's their the 11th annual report card on American education. (Warning: site is designed for IE and does a few odd things in Firefox/Mozilla) The stat-filled pdf version has all kinds of interesting numbers.

Bottom line: Florida schools still suck, comparatively speaking

+ Academic achievement -- Florida ranks 45th among the states
+ Expenditures per student -- 41st
+ increased funding 1981-2001 -- 43rd
+ Staff salaries -- 31st
+ Pupil/teacher ratio -- 45th

Comments:
I am not the least bit surprised that the Washington, D.C. ranked last. That saids a lot there.
